This obituary gives a more well-rounded portrait of the filmmaker. While La Jetee is one of the high watermarks in film art, it tends to overshadow his other work. Both as an academic and a filmmaker, his later Marxist films (especially Grin Without a Cat) had a rather large impact on me, and his later forays into found footage or works with computers like Level 5, were quite prescient.
