Steve McQueen talks Shame Oscar snub
Shame will be one of the most high-profile absentees as next weekend’s Oscar ceremony, having initially been touted for a host of nominations in high-profile categories. Director Steve McQueen has spoken out about the decision, and says it’s down to America’s awkwardness around the subject of sex.

..

What’s interesting is that sexuality is almost always a requirement for an actress to be nominated, nudity is statistically a plus, and that this year sexuality and/or a focus on gender is central to all of the actress nominees. These same qualities appear to be reversed when it comes to male actors. Fassbender’s (and even Gosling’s; his character in Drive was very much about questioning notions of masculinity in action) snub shows that Oscar may not be as comfortable with actors who either challenge strong or celebrated depictions of male sexuality.
